Visionary leadership - why this approach is critical for our future

Writer's picture: Paul SaundersPaul Saunders

In a world where short-term gains often overshadow long-term visions, there exists a rare breed of leaders who dare to think and act on a time frame that will outdate them. These visionary leaders are not just focused on the next quarter or the next election cycle; they are building legacies that will span generations.

So, what sets these leaders apart, and why is their approach so critical for our future?

Visionary Leadership - leaders who think beyond their lifetime, embrace a long-term perspective & understand that true progress is often slow and incremental. They recognise that the most significant changes—whether in business, politics, or society—require time to take root and flourish. By thinking beyond their immediate circumstances, they are able to make decisions that prioritise sustainability, resilience, and enduring impact.

Iconic Examples

Consider the likes of Mahatma Gandhi, who envisioned an independent India long before it became a reality, or Nelson Mandela, who dedicated his life to ending apartheid in South Africa and fostering a peaceful transition to democracy. Another example, John F. Kennedy, set forth a vision for space exploration that was truly ahead of its time. His ambitious goal to land a man on the moon not only galvanised a nation but also laid the groundwork for technological advancements that continue to benefit humanity.

The 4 Characteristics of Visionary Leaders

As you read, reflect on your own leadership style and ask these questions:

  • Do I believe in leaving a legacy?

  • Where am I displaying characteristics of visionary leadership?

  • How might I further develop visionary leadership characteristics in my leadership roles?

#1. Patience and Perseverance:

Visionary leaders use patience to create the sustainable long-lasting growth and progress they desire. It takes a long time, and it also takes perseverance. To persevere and be resilient in overcoming barriers, to have the ability to persevere in tough economic times knowing their vision will produce long term return on investment.

Visionary leaders are willing to invest time and resources in initiatives and accept that not all of them may yield immediate results. They understand that real change requires sustained effort and are prepared to stay the course, even in the face of setbacks.

They adopt a growth mindset that allows them to continue to learn and adapt to the situation, learn from setbacks and engage others to keep focussed on the end goal.

#2. Legacy Mindset:

Visionary leaders are motivated by the desire to leave a lasting legacy. Their actions are guided by a sense of responsibility to future generations, and they measure success not just by what they achieve in their own lifetime, but by the foundations they lay for others.

They are systems thinkers; they know they need to ensure the systems and processes they build will be the foundation of their legacy. Anyone can achieve goals when they set their mind to it, but the ability to continually achieve goals for a long period of time requires long term strategic and systems thinking. Quick wins are celebrated along the way, but the emphasis is on the long term goal. Like in professional football - it is not about winning one game - it is the ability to have a system in place for the team to continue to win and then succeed in the finals.

Visionary leaders continue to ask questions like: What will the next generation learn from what we do today?  What legacy will we leave for them to carry on? Is what we do today sustainable for tomorrow’s world?

#3. Innovative Thinking:

Visionary leaders are not afraid to challenge the status quo. They think creatively and are open to exploring new ideas and approaches, even if they seem radical at the time. Innovative leadership thinking involves adopting unconventional approaches to problem

solving, encouraging creativity & fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Visionary leaders who embrace innovation inspire their teams to think outside the box and challenge the status quo. They create psychologically safe work environments where it is ok to ask questions; teams can raise issues when things are not working and feel empowered to fix things, to experiment and change procedures or ways of working. Such work cultures thrive through continuous learning and a desire to improve and grow. Innovative leadership is about having great ideas but also about creating an environment where those ideas can flourish.

Visionary leaders encourage and reward innovation as they know innovation creates a better future for the next generation.

#4. Collaboration and Coaching Leadership:

Visionary Leaders understand the power of collaboration and coaching.

Used together they empower individuals to work together and to

reach their full potential.

Collaborative leaders foster a team-oriented approach, encouraging open

communication, shared decision making, and collective problem solving. They create

an inclusive environment where everyone/e voice is heard and valued. This leads to

increased trust and engagement.

Coaching leaders, on the other hand, focus on the development of their team members.

The visionary leader, as coach, provides guidance, feedback, and support, helping

individuals to build on their strengths and improve their skills. By using coaching

techniques such as active listening, asking powerful questions, and providing

constructive feedback, these leaders enable their teams to grow and succeed.

Together, collaborative and coaching leadership styles cultivate a supportive and

dynamic workplace culture that promotes continuous learning and

high performance.

Visionary leaders know that part of their legacy is ensuring there are capable people to continue their work. They know they need to coach leaders to work together towards the same vision of the future. They prioritise collaboration and coaching in their daily work routine. They ensure others understand their vision and accept that achieving long term visions require a collective effort, a collective leadership mindset.

By coaching and empowering others, they ensure that their ideas and initiatives continue to thrive beyond their own involvement.

Case example of the importance of Visionary Leadership

The role of Visionary Leadership in delivering Environment Social Governance (ESG) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s).

The achievement of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) heavily relies on long-term leadership thinking. These goals are inherently future-focused, aiming to create a sustainable and equitable world for generations to come.

Leaders who think beyond their lifetimes are more likely to prioritise the ESG goals and integrate them into their strategies. For example, addressing climate change (SDG 13) requires a commitment to long-term environmental sustainability practices. Reducing inequalities (SDG 10) involves systematic changes that may take years or even decades to manifest fully. Similarly, promoting responsible consumption and production (SDG 12) necessitates a shift in mindset that favours long-term benefits over short-term profits.

Summary

The importance of long-term leadership In today’s rapidly changing world, the need for leaders who can think and act for the long term has never been more urgent. Issues such as climate change, global conflict, social inequality, and technological disruption require solutions that extend beyond the next political term or fiscal year. Leaders with a long-term vision are better equipped to address these complex challenges and to steer us towards a more sustainable and equitable future.

Leaders who think and act on a time frame that will outdate them are rare, but their impact is profound. By prioritising long-term goals over short-term gains, they set the stage for lasting change and progress. In doing so, they remind us that true leadership is not about immediate rewards, but about building a legacy that will benefit generations to come.
